There are a lot of cars that have critical faults. They’re not abysmal like a Yugo. In fact, they’re fairly competent vehicles, doing an adequate or better job at what they should be doing. However, the critical fault always hangs over them, and that fault would be the price.

For example, let’s look at the Volkswagen Eos. It comes with a 2.0 litre engine that makes 200 horsepower and 207 ft-lbs of torque, has a leather interior, and all in all looks like a nice little cruiser for the everyman.

Except it’s not for the everyman. Starting price in Canada before taxes or shipping is $42,990. That’s more than a Miata, Ford Mustang Ecoboost, the Fiat 500, the Beetle, and almost as much as a 2-Series convertible. Not exactly a great deal. Now, if this was closer in pricing to the rest of the Golfs, maybe at under $30,000 with a cloth interior, maybe it would be a good deal. But at that price? Crack pipe.

So, what cars can you think of that cost more than you think they’re worth?

I don’t hate this as much as I think I should and that makes me sad

In its final model year, the Volvo C70 started at $41,200.

At least this isn’t Porsche where you can double the price of your car with options.

I nominate the Audi A3/4, and really any German “luxury” car in that class. Even the ATS before incentives.

Seriously, just up-trim a Passat and save yourself $5,000. No, it’s not quite the same thing, but what Audi is offering down low isn’t worth the premium, not at all.

Almost bought a used ‘08 Eos once. It ended up being between that and my ‘10 Mazda3, both for about $10k. Good car to get used if you’re into the sort of thing that the Eos is. It’s a bit of a boat for it’s little stature, but the Transformer-y drop top is fun and the engine still shines through a bit at the top of the powerband. I’d rather have a GTI, but seeing as circumstances wouldn’t allow that (yay for controlling and ill-informed parents), the Eos wasn’t bad.

I still much prefer my Bessie. Love that little black thing.

This. Mid-size “luxury” Audi/Mercedes/BMW/Cadillac are nowhere near being worth the premium prices that they charge for them unless you go for upper trims (which also have insane prices).

The Mark VII Golf. Not hard to run one up to $40,000 with all the bells and whistles. For a hatchback made in Mexico.

This is probably the reason I see so few Mark VII’s on the road.

Living where I live talking prices it’s just depressing...

Yes those are US dollars, and that’s a 2014 used one.

Weird brand (for most people.) Weird car (for a weird brand for most people) for them to make.

Still one of the cars that makes me take a second look when I see one on the street. Truly beautiful car.

I’m a huge fan of the Abarth. But $34K for a fully decked out Abarth Cabrio? Yikes.

Acting like a car is somehow marginalized because it's made in Mexico is a pretty shocking perpetration of racism. It's not like technology is set back 250 years once you cross the border. They have space, a cheap workforce, and aren't swimming in manufacturing jobs already. Not to mention they don't have to ship that portion over seas or pay the higher prices to have them built in America. NBD.

Yeah, but when you do that, you still have a Porsche.
